Hays Oil & Gas Global Job Index rebounds in the second quarter of 2013

Updated: 01 Mar 2014

The Hays Oil & Gas Global Job Index shows a slightly stronger oil and gas labour market for the second quarter of 2013 compared to the first.

In Asia the Index stood at 1.90 at the end of June, up from 1.76 three months prior, meaning more oil and gas jobs are now available.

The Index charts the number of jobs posted on nine oil and gas portals across the world. Globally it was at 1.69 in June, which was consistent with where it stood at the end of the first quarter (March) at 1.68.

“Globally the general sentiment in the industry is neutral,” said John Faraguna, Global Managing Director of Hays Oil & Gas. ”The global economy remains in recovery mode, but we do see good signs of improvement in many regions around the world which should bode well for energy demand in the next few years.”

One of these regions is Asia, where the traditional slowdown in the Asian job market during the first quarter of the year was followed by a steady climb reflecting the underlying positive health of the SE Asian oil and gas market.

“The natural gas and LNG market continues to be a key market for SE Asia with China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia being the active players,” says Simon Lance, Regional Director of Hays in China.

“Singapore’s first LNG import terminal, expected to be ready soon, will further fuel demand in this sector. Exploration of oil and gas throughout the region is likely to continue with a particular interest in shale gas and oil deposits, mainly in China.

“Construction of offshore structures continues to be an expanding market in Asia and a shortage of Senior Project Managers with ‘mega project’ experience means companies will seek expatriates. This demand is driven by Singapore’s status as the regional and global hub for design and construction of offshore rigs, FPSO, FSO & Topside structures. Asian businesses are keen to secure a slice of the business which in turn increases demand for Estimators and Proposals Engineers with strong backgrounds in FPSO and topside projects.

“Regional Sales Managers and Business Development Managers continue to be targeted by global original equipment manufacturers to achieve growth targets capitalising on the strong development of offshore oil and gas fields in Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and China.

“Local independent operators and majors are consistently on the lookout for G&P candidates to support offshore and onshore drilling operations. In particular, they are keen on candidates with experience of non-conventional and deepwater oil and gas fields. Additionally, Senior Drilling Engineers are in high demand, especially Malaysian and Indonesian nationals who are needed to maintain local content requirements for both countries.

“A number of major ONG and LNG refinery projects in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia are currently in the FEED and construction stages and are set to deliver strong demand in these markets over the next three years. This is fuelling a need for Project Managers and Project Directors with LNG experience.”
