Demand for highly-skilled HR professionals continues to rise in China

Updated: 14 Apr 2016

Experienced HR professionals who can assist with employees’ individual career development and enhance an organisation’s productivity are highly sought after by employers in China, says recruiting experts Hays.

In its latest Hays Quarterly Report for January to March 2015, the recruiter says there is growing demand for HR Business Partners, Employee Relations specialists and Learning & Development specialists.

“The HR function is becoming an important focus for businesses in China as they look at staff development and retention,” says Simon Lance, Regional Director of Hays in China.

“The upward pressure on salaries recently highlighted in the 2015 Hays Asia Salary Guide is also adding to the challenge of retaining top performing employees. As a result, we are seeing more companies willing to spend the time and effort necessary to find quality HR candidates who can understand their business and provide professional HR solutions.

“In particular demand are HR Business Partners with business acumen and professional HR expertise to support business growth. Senior candidates with a multinational HR background remain in high demand as they understand the business as a whole and can provide practical and efficient support to HR teams.

Candidates with experience in handling employee relations, labour issues and performance management are much valued in general HR roles. Internal communications is becoming more valued as employers look to create healthy internal communications channels that help to retain staff and build a stronger company culture. This makes it easier to deliver new policies and programs.”

The recruiter also says that employers have a growing need for seasoned Organisational Development specialists as Chinese employees are increasingly looking for career progression.

HR professionals who can help with employees’ individual career development, as well as enhance an organisation’s performance through the analysis of its organisational structure and productivity are highly sought. They are also required to formulate programs for the long-term development of the organisation,” he said.

“Employers are also looking for talented professionals who can not only focus on Learning & Development systems and structures, but have solid experience in course design and delivery. The most popular candidates are those who have training expertise and can demonstrate strong business acumen and influence corporate manpower strategy.”

Finally, many businesses are now looking for HR talent with the ability to adapt to a digital world as

the Internet is changing the way people live in China. “HR professionals are expected to have initiative and be creative in finding innovative ways of communicating through social media tools,” says Simon.
