Overseas returnees and international candidates within the research and development sector continue to be in high demand by pharmaceutical companies, says recruiting expert Hays in China.
According to the recruiter’s latest Hays Quarterly Report Clinical Research Managers, Biostatistics Managers, Biology specialists, District Sales Managers and Strategic Marketing Managers are the most in demand roles in the life sciences space.
“As international candidates are highly sought after for middle to senior level openingsthey often seek generous salary packages that include benefits such as relocation costs, education support for children and living allowances,”says Simon Lance, Regional Director of Hays in China. “However, these expectations are sometimes not in line with the needs of the employer and compromises are necessary.
“Employers are looking to hire the right candidates in terms of skill, experience, education and cultural fit. A good performer with the right cultural fit and mindset is key to the success of a team and business. That’s why new jobs are still being created for unique candidates with the right skill sets.”
According to Hays, clinical research remains a core function in research & development centres. Managers in this area are required to conduct clinical trials for new drugs that are still in the development phase, and continue to be in demand.
“Biostatistics Managers continue to be sought as they run key teams that help in clinical trials and multinational corporations often look for candidates with international qualifications and experience. We are also seeing demand for biology specialists who play a key role in discovering new drug compounds that are necessary for the product development pipeline.”
Simon says it’s not only R&D professionals that are needed in China. “District Sales Managers are in demand as they are needed by multinational corporations to manage sales teams that are core to driving revenue and profit growth. Marketing Managers with skills in strategic marketing are also highly sought after.
“Another trend we are noticing is that employers are trying to utilise every resource and platform to increase the reach of their employment brand and attract more candidates,” says Simon.
