Get career ‘appy – tech jobs skyrocket in China’s ‘battle of the apps’

Updated: 14 Apr 2016

China’s rapid adoption of mobile internet applications is creating jobs for tech savvy candidates to create innovate new apps as well as social marketing experts to promote them, says recruiting experts Hays.

Competition between well-known apps such as Didi Taxi, Kuaidi Dache, Easytaxi and Yaoyaozhaoche has created a ‘battle of the apps’. But according to recruiters, the real battle is for talent.

“To win market share, the organisations behind these apps need employees who can further develop and improve their apps, as well as people who can promote the apps’ use,” says Simon Lance, Regional Director of Hays in China.

“With a shortage of suitable and experienced candidates in these two areas, attracting the right candidates with the right skill-set is really where the battleground lies.

“Right now we’re seeing high demand for IOS Developers with C, C++ or Objective C expertise, Android Developers with Java, Front-end Engineers, UI, UE or UX Leads or Managers, Product Managers and Development Directors.

“And marketers of these apps must evolve with the times in order to fully connect with their customers and increase market share. That’s why we’re seeing demand for Project Managers, Marketing Managers with digital marketing, mobile marketing and social media expertise, and Communications Managers and Directors with a relevant industry background,” he said.

But the rapid evolution of the sector means there is a severe shortage of professionals who have gained the relevant skills and experience. Given this shortage, Simon says that salaries have risen quickly as employers compete for talent.

Looking ahead, he says that demand for tech and marketing talent with mobile internet apps expertise will only increase.

“As China’s online-to-offline (O2O) sector continues to grow, the number of mobile internet apps being used in traditional industries will only skyrocket,” said Simon. “So too will the number of jobs for developers and marketers with app experience.”
