YOUR CAREER DEVELOPMENT IS IN YOUR HANDS

Employees that act to ensure their own career development and growth are more likely to secure their dream role long-term, advises Hays.

“Confidence among employers is rising, but unless you have very specific skills in demand your dream role is unlikely to fall at your feet,” said Emma Charnock, Regional Director of Hays. “In fact, earlier this year the Hong Kong government announced measures to combat unemployment, which included a proposed mainland internship for university graduates.

“Such an internship would have positive career development benefits. It is a good example of how you need to take action now to get your career where you want it to be. Don’t wait for the market to improve in the hope your dream role comes your way, and don’t assume your employer will manage your career development. Some might, particularly for their top talent, but many feel it’s not their responsibility.

“We suggest you take responsibility for your own career development. Set yourself a career goal and understand the steps in achieving it.

“Even if you are currently working in a small organisation this is possible. For example, your goal might be to become team leader. You could offer to chair meetings, manage projects and train others in an area of proficiency. You could seek a mentor, attend short courses or workshops to sharpen your skills and learn by watching the high-performers in your company or industry.

“Such steps will help you manage your own career through turbulent times as well as times of economic prosperity,” said Emma.
